Hot Peppers!!

Most of our pepper plants are growing well and now that it is cooling down we are beginning to see some fruit.  The plants grow in the summer but they do not produce fruit while it is really hot.  We have habaƱeros, New Mex, Italian roasters, jalapeƱos, serranos,  and cayenne peppers all growing on the side of the house.   The plum tree is in the  back there.  It survived another summer but the peach tree we had did not.

Fall Garden on the Way

Mark and Lexi are busy getting the garden ready for planting.   The lower garden is full of sweet potatoes.  They took over the garden this summer.  We also have several stalks of corn with 6 ears forming.  I think we will get a dozen ears by the time we are done.

Kissing Pomegranates

These will be ready this fall and will be for sale in the store.    The garden is doing well and we are gearing up for the summer.  We will open the store again in early fall.   We had a lot of fun doing the store this spring.  I hope everyone has a nice summer, check back with the blog periodically as we will update it every so often.

Flood Irigation

It is a good thing the back garden drains well.  We over watered the upper garden a bit and the lower garden ended up getting a nice soak too.

Still going strong

We have a new item this year, the artichoke.  We had no idea how much space it would take up but it is currently producing  7 artichokes.   We will have a few for sale this week.  We also have lots of eggplants growing after the plants got a good soak.  Other things for sale this week are:  fennel, green onions, snow peas, Swiss chard, beets, and lots of herbs.  We can also pick some lemons.

April 7th

All went well this Saturday.    We sold out of almost everything and we had a few new visitors.  Many of the vegetables are too big for the little store so we set out a table topped with fresh beets, fennel, and onions.   Our next date will be April 21rst.  We should have more beets, onions, fennel, chard, artichokes, snow peas, and lots of other yummy stuff.  Lexi will post a few pictures from the garden this week.  Thanks to all the friends and neighbors who came to see us.

Getting ready for the store

After we harvest the vegetables and herbs, we wash them and bundle them up.  Here is the Swiss Chard drying out and bundled up.

Bees Bees Bees

We found a huge hive in the tree in front of the house today. Here is a close up picture.

There are always so many bees in the garden, especially the lavender and the rosemary.  I guess they wanted to move in.  I located a bee removal company that saves the bees if possible and gives them to bee keepers.  I would like to think that this will be the fate of our hive.  I wouldn't banish them if I didn't have to.  We always work alongside the bees and they never bother us.    We are going to do the store on Saturday morning at 8:30.  We were not sure if we wanted to do it this week with Easter coming up but we have so much nice stuff in the garden to pick and we need the practice.  Come by and visit Lexi this Saturday for beets, carrots, tomatoes, onions, Swiss chard, and lots of herbs.

The Store is Open

Lexi's  trial run went well!   He had our trial run on Saturday and it was great.  We sold out of several items and had to go into the garden to pick more.   We have a few improvements to make and we will have lots of vegetables in a few weeks.  We should have more rainbow carrots and fennel and beets, as well as lots of green onions, and herbs.   I will let everyone know when we are opening again.  She is planning to run the store every few weeks on Saturday mornings from 8:30 - 10:30.   A big shout out to friends and neighbors who came by to shop and to Pat and Julie from the front office at Lagos.   Lexi will post a few pictures of the garden this week so everyone can see their food growing.
